Colonel Jennifer Sovada is, by any metric, an out-of-the-box thinker. As the Special Assistant to the Deputy Chief of Staff for Intelligence, Surveillance, and Reconnaissance for the U.S. Air Force, her goal is to build relationships and increase information sharing between the government and non-traditional partners—a mission that is increasingly critical to technological innovation in the U.S. defense sector.

Colonel Sovada seeks out innovation by working with organizations such as think tanks or universities to build and share ideas and technology. This collaboration has led to new programs such as Air Force Cyber Command, which establishes, operates, maintains, and defends Air Force networks to maintain the information advantage the U.S. holds around the world.

AFCYBER isn’t Colonel Sovada’s first experience dealing with frontline technology for national defense. The Air Force Technical Applications Center at Patrick Air Force Base, Florida, where she served as the wing commander, is the sole organization tasked with conducting nuclear treaty monitoring.

When not advancing the military’s high-tech interests, Colonel Sovada mentors graduate students in Georgetown University’s “Hacking for Defense” course, an education initiative sponsored by the federal government which tasks students with real-world national security issues from the Department of Defense.

Colonel Sovada’s background lies at the intersection of innovative technology and national defense. Her distinct expertise gives clarity to how AI is already being implemented by the military, and the potential it still holds.
